阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中, 选出最佳选项。

A

Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.

I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.

I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That 1ogic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all.

After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choice.

21. What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?

 B. He would be very excited if he tried it out.

 C. He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.

 D. The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him.

23. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

 A. Cleverness and Kindness      B. The Starting of Amazon

  C. Following My Passion       D. We Are What We Choose

24. We can know from the passage that_______.

  A. the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author

Our pets have moved several times and usually the moves are across the country or even to a new country. This means we normally fly them and have, over the years, come up with some tips on how to ensure they arrive safely.

If you haven’t decided yet on how best to move your pets, I usually think about which situation will be less stressful. Keep in mind that when you fl y pets and are not flying with them, that is, they wont be on the same flight as you, your pets must be checked in at cargo (托运货物处) at least three hours before departure time. Add this time to the flight time, plus another hour at the destination to have them released from cargo. Sometimes it is less time for your pets to drive rather than fly. Also, check with your vet to see if flying is safe for your pet. In our situation, one of our cats has a heart condition and our vet does not recommend flying due to the stress involved and the change in air pressure (altitude).

If you are planning on moving your cats by flying them to your home, be aware that most airlines will insist you use an IATA (International Air Transport Association) approved carrier to transport your pet. The requirements of an IATA approved carrier are based on species’ needs and animal size. The IATA Live Animals Regulations describe minimum standards for carrier construction for all types of animals, ranging from insects to elephants.

Also, space for your animal should be booked a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Most airlines have restrictions on the number of animals they carry per flight.

Only small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin with you or if the airline will not allow this due to space limitations, your pets will be sent as special baggage in a heated and ventilated (通风的) hold. The hold provides a quiet and darkened area, which can be less stressful than a noisy cabin.

28. What can we know about your pets according to the second paragraph?

A. They must be inspected before boarding. B. They can’t fly with you on the same flight.

C. They can reduce your stress with you.  D. They should be hidden through the customs.

29. Why should you consult your vet?

A. To ask them to provide a document for flying.

B. Because the pets may be at risk while flying.

C. To ask them to look after your pet.

D. Because your cat is unfit for flying.

30. What should you do after having decided to move your pet by air?

A. Get enough food and water for it.   B. Make it take up only small place.

C. Rent an IATA approved carrier in time.

D. Set up International Air Transport Association.

31. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. How to keep your pet safe.            B. How to deal with your pet.

C. How to travel with your pet.           D. How to fly your pet.

D

Those of you who are bad at math may some day be able to improve your skills through a painless method of electrical brain stimulation (刺激) .

In a study, neuroscientists at Oxford University reported that adults with normal math abilities were able to improve their performance on a series of numerical tests with the help of a technique known as transcranial direct-current stimulation (TDCS).

TDCS involves stimulating specific regions of the brain with low-level electrical currents to improve or reduce the activity of neurons (神经细胞).Over the last decade, the procedure has shown promise in improving brain functions in stroke (中风) victims, as well as in people with Parkinson’s disease. But this is the first study to show that TDCS can help healthy individuals do better on math tests.

For the study, Cohen Dosh and his colleagues studied 15 student volunteers. The students were asked to learn a series of artificial numbers. “As our aim is eventually to help children when they are experiencing learning difficulties with numbers ,we wanted the adult subjects to learn new materials rather than testing them with materials that they already knew,” Cohen Dosh explains.

His team tested the participants’ ability to judge the relationships of the artificial numbers to one another and to map them correctly in space using standard testing methods for numerical ability.

The results of the tests showed that the brain stimulation improved the participants’ ability to learn the new numbers and that those improvements lasted for six months. Control tests showed that the effect was specific to the learned symbols and did not affect other cognitive (认知的) functions.

“Like many good studies, it opens a window for lots of questions, including‘Will this work in children?’ and ‘Is it safe to use in children?’ ” says Dr.Edwin M.Robertson.

“Our aim is to find a way to improve cognitive treatment by coupling it with noninvasive and painless brain stimulation,” says Cohen Dosh. “The experiments that we are doing have been designed to improve learning disabilities, but of course they can be used by others to improve average math performance, and we don’t have any control over that.”

32. According to the text ,TDCS has been applied in the field of ________.

A. physics       B. psychology     C. education  D. medicine

33. The underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refers to ________.

A. the artificial numbers       B. adult subjects    C. new materials D. learning difficulties

34. The attitude of Dr.Robertson towards Dosh’s technique is ________.

 A. neutral        B. excited    C. indifferent    D. disapproving

35. What is the main idea of the text ?

 A. A way has been found to improve the math skills of adults.

 B. Teachers can stimulate the math skills of students with electricity.

 C. Electric shocks may reduce one’s ability to calculate.

 D. Math skills improve with electrical brain stimulation.

4 Key Strategies for Running to Lose Weight

As one of the most active exercises out there, running is an extremely efficient way to burn calories and lose weight. A 150-pound person will burn approximately 100 calories per mile when running.   36

1. Healthy Eating is the First Step

If you want to lose weight by running, keep in mind that you’ll only lose pounds if you burn more calories than you consume. To lose a pound, you have to burn, through exercise or life functions, about 3500 calories.   37   Runners do have special nutrition needs, but the basic principles for healthy eating still apply. Try choosing smaller portions of high-fat and high-calorie foods and eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

2. Follow a training schedule

Sticking to a training schedule is a simple way to stay motivated to run.   38   So it’s much harder to postpone or skip workouts. Following a schedule can also help you avoid a running injury by not increasing your mileage too quickly.

3. Run regularly

If you don’t want to follow a schedule, you still need to have some consistency with your running because you won’t lose weight by running once a week. It’s best to get some activity  every day.   39   If you find that your motivation to run is suffering, follow some necessary tips to get inspired.

4.   40

Incorporating speed work or interval training (running at a very fast speed for short intervals of time) into your running routine can also help your weight loss efforts. Speed work burns a great amount of calories in a short period of time. You’ll also increase your muscle mass , causing you to burn more calories throughout the day.

A. Eat for Performance

B. Keep it Challenging

C. Here are ways to improve your running motivation.

D. So you’ll need to combine running with a healthy diet.

E. But if that’s not possible, try to shoot for at least 3-4 times per week.

F. You’ll know exactly what you need to do every day and each run builds on the next.

G. If you’re hoping to use running to lose weight, here’s some advice on how to be   successful.

Dear classmates ,

I’m more than pleased to share with you Wang Wei’s story.

On his way home yesterday afternoon,Wang Wei noticed an old lady fall to the ground and didn’t hesitate to help her. After helping her to safety, he dialed 120 and the granny got timely treatment in hospital.

I was deeply impressed by what Wang Wei had done. There is no doubt that such a deed should be encouraged. People nowadays seem to be getting more and more unwilling to help others. Therefore, Wang Wei’s behavior is of great significance in awaking people’s awareness of helping others. Actually, it is our duty to make our world a more harmonious place.

In short, I strongly advocate that everyone should learn from Wang Wei and always be ready to help others.

    That’s all. Thank you.
