Chinese students always complain that they’re under great pressure and don’t get enough sleep. But they may be surprised to learn that they’re much luckier than their peers (同龄人) in South Korea and Japan, according to a recently published report, conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on the physical and mental health of senior high school students in the three Asian countries.

According to the study among nearly 6,000 high school students in the three countries, Chinese students are the tallest but poorest in physical fitness. Chinese students are on average 168.17cm, compared with 167.61cm for South Korean students and 164.70 cm for Japanese students. Chinese students asked for sick leave more than students in other countries. About 72 percent of Korean students never asked for sick and injury leave during high school, compared to 53 percent for Japanese students and 45 percent for Chinese students. Moreover, Chinese students drink alcohol and smoke earlier than Korean and Japanese students. Around 70 percent of Chinese students have drunk alcohol, compared to 50 percent for Korean and Japanese students.

According to the survey, Japanese and South Korean students suffer more pressure than their Chinese peers. Statistics(统计)show 16 percent of students in China said they experienced mental pressure often over the past year, while the numbers in Japan and South Korea were 33 percent and 47 percent respectively. Their worries come from “study”, “future after graduation”, “friendships” and “relationship with their parents”. To go with stress, 57.9 percent of Korean students sleep the least, less than six hours a day, compared with 46.6 percent of Japanese students and 30 percent of Chinese students.

More Chinese students were satisfied with their physical appearance, double that of students in the survey from Japan and South Korea. The report said that over half of students in South Korea had tried to lose weight in the past year, while in China the figure was only 22 percent.

In measures of self-worth, such as “I think I am valuable” and “I think I am successful”, “I can complete many things”, “I won’t give up to failure,” Chinese students showed greater self-confidence than students in Japan and South Korea.

21. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Chinese students always complain that they’re in bad condition.

B. Chinese students are much luckier than their peers in the Republic of Korea and Japan.

C. Chinese teenagers drink alcohol and smoke earliest and smoke earliest among the three countries.

D. There is a report on the physical and mental health of senior high school students.

22. What does the underlined word “that” in the 4th paragraph refer to?

A. the height B. the percentage C. the weight   D. the number

23. The worries that cause students to be stressed come from the following factors(因素) EXCEPT__________.

A. study and career B. physical appearance C. friendships   D. family relationship

The famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film a beautiful sunset(日落) over the ocean, so that the audiences could see his hero and heroine in front of it at the end of the film as they said goodbye to each other forever. He sent his camera crew(摄影队)out one evening to film the sunset for him.

The next morning he said to the men, “Have you provided me with that sunset?”

“No, sir,” the men answered.

The director was angry. “Why not?” he asked.

“Well, sir,” one of the men answered, “we’re on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west. We can get you a sunrise(日升) over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset.”

“But I want a sunset!” the director shouted. “Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one.”

But then a young secretary had an idea. “Why don’t you photograph a sunrise,” she suggested, “and then play it backwards(向后倒)? Then it’ll look like a sunset.”

“That’s a very good idea!” the director said. Then he turned to the camera crew and said, “Tomorrow morning I want you to get me a beautiful sunrise over the sea.”

The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay. Then at nine o’clock they took it to the director. “Here it is, sir,” they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased.

They all went into the studio. “All right,” the director explained, “now our hero and heroine are going to say goodbye. Run the film backwards so that we can see the ‘sunset’ behind them.”

The “sunset” began, but after a quarter of a minute, the director suddenly put his face in his hands and shouted to the camera crew to stop.

The birds in the film were flying backwards, and the waves(海浪) on the sea were going away from the beach.

I hate nosy (好管闲事的)neighbors and it’s very unlucky that I had one for myself. They moved in a couple of months back and although I never felt that they were a strange family, I’ve always hated the way they got “too close” to me, my house, my garden, and even my garbage cans(垃圾桶).

One day, my neighbors were mowing their lawn (草坪). My garbage cans were near their lawn. For some strange reasons, I found the wife looking through my garbage cans. I felt angry but since they were from a different culture, I thought that maybe it was “normal” from their ideas.

That afternoon, the couple knocked on my front door. When I opened, they gave me a plastic bag. Inside were my old daily bills, credit cards and bank statements, and an old birthday card that my old uncle sent me. They said that they were returning them to me because these documents contained very private(私密的)information that might be used by others.

I’ve heard it before. I asked them how those documents can be used by others and they started telling me their own experience, which forced them to leave their home and move next door to us. The wife told me that she never destroyed the bills. They also had a “nosy neighbor” who looked through their garbage cans, which they actually thought was pretty strange. Little did they know that this “nosy neighbor” was collecting their personal information from their rubbish. Then all their money was taken out from the bank by their neighbor.

It was a very painful experience for all of them and they wanted to leave them all behind so they left. I was very thankful. They were not nosy neighbors. They simply didn’t want us to experience the same thing that they did.

28. What made the author angry?

D. To borrow some money from the author.

30. The neighbors came to live next door to the author because

A. they no longer had money to live in their former house

B. they didn’t want to live in such a noisy house as before

C. their personal documents were used by their former neighbor

D. they thought the author was much better than their former neighbor

31. Which of the following can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. The author was kind and helpful to the neighbors.

B. The neighbors had to move from place to place.

C. The neighbors didn’t have enough money.

D. The author changed his idea about his neighbors.

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, You're nervous and that's okay. Everyone is afraid of high school.I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.

On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn't figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn't think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right.

Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.

Since then, I've been elected vice monitor of my class, which wasn't much of a victory since only three people ran for the four positions.

It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something that any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some out-of-class activities because you'll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn't straight A's.

Most important of all, be who you are, whether you're a “fool”, an athlete, or a lower grader. Don't try to pretend to be someone you're not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.

32. The main reason for the author's fear on his first day is that ________.

A. he was unable to work out the puzzle

B. his schoolmates were unfriendly to him

C. he was not familiar with the new surrounding

D. his schoolbag was too heavy for him to carry

33. From the author's first day experience we can infer that ________.

A. his home was far from the school B. he got to school before classes began

C. he was fond of the school immediately.   D. he didn't know the right way to class

34. After his first week at school, the author ________.

A. was still not accustomed to the schedule

B. gradually adjusted himself to the new school

C. found high school not so challenging as he had imagined

D. ran for monitor of his class against three other students

35. According to the passage, the secret of the author's success lies mainly in ________.

A. making more friends B. getting more A's at school

C. being who he really is D. joining in out-of-class activities

After entering high school, you must wonder how to study well. Here are some good skills for you.

1. Go to class.

If you want to do well at school, going to class is the first step in studying well. If you miss classes, you will miss what the teacher thinks is important; as a result, you’ll miss what is the most likely to end up on the test.       36

2. Take good notes.

Try not to write down everything.     37     Write down unfamiliar terms. After class, review(复习)your notes as soon as possible. You can fill in details that you missed and review the material while it is still fresh on your mind.

3.      38

If you are struggling in class, talk to your teacher. He or she may be able to give you more help or tutor(指导) you before or after class. Most teachers have little sympathy(同情) for students who just become worried about failing during the last few weeks of the grading period.

4. Take part in class discussions.

In order to learn more in class, it is helpful to take part in class discussions. Asking questions and having eye contact(交流)with your teachers and classmates can increase your participation(参与) and your focus during the class discussion.     39     This helps you make your point clear in class.

5. Form study groups.

40      Make sure that everyone is familiar with the material because you do not want to spend time re-teaching material to people who do not understand it. Be careful! Sometimes group sessions can become chatting sessions.

A. Don’t be late for your class.

B. Talk to your teacher if you need help.

C. You should write down all the new terms.

D. So if you want to study well, go to every class.

E. Get students together who want to do well in class.

F. All you need is to put the main points in your own words.

G. If the material(材料) is difficult, you’d better read it before class.

Dear Zhang Ming,

How are you? Thanks so much for inviting me to your sixteenth birthday party. Happy birthday to you! I’d like to go, but I am afraid I can’t be present. I’m so sorry.

The mid-term examination is around the corner, which is very important for me, so I have to bury myself in my studies to prepare for it. Here, I’d like to express my best wishes in advance. Knowing that you are fond of reading in your spare time, I have just bought you a novel which is highly thought of on the Internet. The present will be delivered to you by express and will get to you tomorrow.

Sorry again for my absence and have fun at your party.

                           Yours,

                            Li Hua
