Isle Royale is surrounded by the deep blue waters of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake on Earth by area. The park’s quiet forests and rocky shores offer a kind of solitude(幽静)and peace not found in some of the more popular national parks. No cars or other wheeled vehicles are permitted on Isle Royale.
There are no real roads on the island. The only way to get to the park is by boat or sea plane. The entire national park covers a total area of 230,000 hectares, including some 450 islands that surround Isle Royale. 52,000 hectares is land. The rest is water.
Isle Royale became a national park in 1940. In 1980, officials named it an International Biosphere Reserve because of its unique ecosystem. Its remote location is part of what makes it among the least-visited national parks. But, once they arrive, most visitors stay a while. The average stay for visitors to Isle Royale National Park is 3.5 days. The average stay for visitors to most other national parks is just four hours.
Isle Royale offers hiking, camping, boating, and even scuba diving. The extremely cold waters of Lake Superior help keep shipwrecks in excellent condition. The National Park Service protects 11 sunken boats for divers to explore. They are reminders of Lake Superior’s commercial shipping history.
Visitors to Isle Royale share the trails with a well-studied population of moose(驼鹿)and wolves. Both species migrated to the island sometime in the early to mid-1900s. Scientists believe that moose swam to the island. They think wolves walked there during a freeze of the lake sometime in the 1940s. Animal research is the only winter activity going on at Isle Royale.
The national park is closed each year beginning in late October because of the harsh weather conditions. It reopens in spring the next year. Its stunning scenery and unusual solitude keep visitors returning year after year.

28. It can be learned from the text that ________.
A. both moose and wolves walked to Isle Royale

When you watch your pet fish from outside the tank, you may think it has no idea who you are, even if it has met you many times before. But it is possible that it knows you extremely well and can even identify you from a crowd of human faces.
At least, this is the conclusion that has been reached by scientists from the University of Oxford in the UK and the University of Queensland in Australia, according to a paper recently published in the scientific journal Nature.
The scientists carried out an extensive study of the archerfish(射水鱼), a species of tropical(热带的)fish that can be found all the way from India to Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia.
Why was the archerfish chosen?
The archerfish was the best choice for the study because of the way it catches its prey(猎物). Known as nature’s sharpshooter(神枪手), it “hunts down” land insects by spitting(吐出)jets of water at them. The flying insects then fall into the water, where the fish waits to eat them. The fact that the archerfish can identify its prey so accurately made the scientists wonder if the fish could be trained to tell between humans as well.
The scientists began by giving four archerfish images of two human faces. At first, the fish tested spat randomly at both. However, they soon learned that if they spat at one image they would get a food reward. After that, they focused mostly on that image. The scientists then tested whether the fish would recognize, and spit at, the familiar face among 44 new ones.
To the scientists’ surprise, the trained archerfish were able to remember the learned image almost 81 percent of the time. And this accuracy improved to 86 percent when the scientists made the identification even harder. They did this by replacing the color photos with a set of black and white images and hiding the shape of the head.
“We were pleasantly surprised at the speed at which the fish learned, as well as their high accuracy,” study co-author Cait Newport of the Oxford University’s department of zoology told The Guardian newspaper.
The results of the study suggest that despite having tiny brains, some fish may have developed a great ability to tell between different things they have seen.
28. What did the study focus on?
A. How smart a fish could be.
B. Whether a fish could recognize human faces.
C. How long a fish could remember a human face.
D. How a fish identified specific people’s bodies.
29. Why was the archerfish a good choice for the study?
A. It can be easily found all over the world.
B. It is good at spitting water at its prey.
C. It can shoot its prey with accuracy.
D. It can distinguish humans from other animals.
30. Which of the following is TRUE about the study?
A. The study started with four archerfish and images of 44 human faces.
B. The fish identified colored images better than black and white ones.
C. The scientists gave the fish food rewards if they spat on the right image.
D. The fish’s visual discrimination capabilities improved a lot after the training.

The Internet is one of the most exciting and powerful inventions of the second half of the 20th century. The reason why it is so powerful is that it provides access to information about almost every aspect of life. As much as the positive impact of Internet is obvious, it is difficult to ignore its negative influences.
The Internet can have a negative influence on people’s political and social views. Since the Internet is based primarily on Western culture, it spreads Western democratic values and presents democracy as the best type of government. It repudiates political views and governments different from democratic ones.
The Internet advocates the Western lifestyle and portrays it as superior to any other lifestyle. It also describes life in the West as that of unrestrained(无拘束的)freedom and unlimited possibilities, without presenting all sides of this perspective. Because of the widespread availability of information, people become unappreciative of the things they have and desire more and more.
Since the Internet is used in almost every aspect of economical, social and political life, it poses many security threats that haven’t been seen before. Internet networks are easy to invade by hackers. The hackers have the ability to damage data and devices and spread viruses.
A lot of business is conducted over the Internet. The Internet presents so much information that an ordinary reader is not able to distinguish between the real and fake or necessary and unnecessary. As a result, people are likely to make unwise decisions.
Surfing the Internet becomes a way of life for some kids and young adults, which alienates(疏远)them from their peers. Excessive Internet usage contributes to other problems, such as obesity. Because of their addiction to the Internet, kids and teenagers spend most of their free time surfing the Web instead of running around and interacting with peers, and the lack of physical exercise may affect the normal development of a healthy body.
32. What does the underlined word “repudiates” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Advocates. B. Recognizes. C. Refuses. D. Supports.
33. Why do some teens keep away from their peers and seldom take exercise?
A. Because they are fat and often made fun of.
B. Because they can’t get along well with peers.
C. Because they are lost in surfing the Internet.
D. Because they think it will be a waste of time.
34. How does the Internet affect us positively?
A. It stresses Western political views.
B. It speaks highly of the Western lifestyle.
C. It presents security threats and confusing information.
D. It can offer information about almost every aspect of life.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Negative effects of the Internet on our life.
B. How the Internet affects every aspect of life.
C. How to deal with negative effects of the Internet.
D. Positive and negative effects of surfing the Internet.
