第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题:每小题2分,共30分)

A

It’s not easy growing up. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. Sometimes we feel worried, sometimes we feel sad, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. But we should take a look back on all the hardships in life with a positive attitude and learn from them. We must overcome every obstacle one small step at a time. We should realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!

Throughout our lives we are going to face many challenges and pains, but we should never let these obstacles keep us from following our dreams.

As a young girl, my parents forced me to do so many things that I didn’t like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music and I also hated them. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I now realize that my parents and teachers wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.

We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just part of our life. They might seem so huge at the time, but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no challenges and lived a life like that. Life would be really boring and meaningless. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!

21. The underlined word “obstacles” (in Paragraph 2) roughly means things that ______.

C. make it difficult for you to do something

D. make you happy

22. How does the author now feel when remembering what her parents did for her in the past?

A. She feels hateful           B. She is grateful

C. She feels upset             D. She is fearful

23. The purpose of the passage is to tell readers ______.

A. everyone should do what they don’t like when young

B. everyone is painful in growing up

C. growing pains can turn into growing gains in a positive way

D. life is full of hardships

B

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly wipe out, the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out. They are not sure to what degree people’s memories are affected.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can ruin people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering.”

But those who are against the research say that maybe the pills can change people’s memories and changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure we want to wipe those memories out.” Said Rebcca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

24. The passage is mainly about

A. a new medical invention                  B. a new research on the pill

C. an argument about the research on the pill    D. a way of wiping out painful memories

25. The drug tested on people can

A. prevent body producing certain chemicals

B. stop people remembering bad experiences

C. cause the brain to fix memories

D. wipe out the emotional effect of memories

26. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with in the last paragraph?

A. Some memories can ruin people’s lives.

B. People want to get rid of bad memories.

C. The pill will reduce people’s sufferings from bad memories.

D. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.

27. We can infer from the passage that

A. the pills will certainly stop people’s emotional memories

B. people doubt the effect of the pills

C. taking the pill will do harm to people’s physical health

  D. the pill has already been produced and used by the public in the US

C

The surprising experiment I am about to describe proves that air is all around you and that it presses down upon you. Air pressure is a powerful force. When you swim underwater, you can feel water pushing on your body. The air all around you does the same. However, your body is so used to it that you do not notice this. The pressure is caused by a layer of air called the atmosphere. This layer surrounds the Earth, extending to about five kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

The following experiment is an easy one that you can do at home. But make sure that you are supervised, because you will need to use matches. Now for the experiment!

What you need

●A hard-boiled egg without the shell

●A bottle with a neck slightly smaller than the egg

●A piece of paper

●A match

Method

Check that the egg will sit firmly on the neck of the bottle.

Tear the paper into strips and put the strips into the bottle.

Light the paper by dropping a burning match into the bottle.

Quickly sit the egg on the neck of the bottle.

Result

Astonishingly, the egg will be sucked into the bottle. Your friends will be amazed when you show them the experiment. But be careful when you handle matches.

Why it happened

As the paper burns, it needs oxygen and uses up the oxygen(air) in the bottle. The egg acts as a seal in the neck of the bottleso no more air can get inside. This reduces the air pressure inside the bottle. The air pressure must equalize, so more air from outside must enter the bottle. The outside air presses against the egg and then the egg is pushed into the bottle! This proves that air is all around and that it is pressing down on us.

28. The experiment is carried out to prove         .

A. water pushes on your body when you swim underwater

B. the pressure of air around us has a powerful force

C. the earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere

D. the air pressure is not equalized around us

29. Why is there the need to take care when you are doing the experiment?

A. The bottle could break.

B. The egg has to be perfectly placed on the neck of the bottle.

C. The egg needs to be shelled.

D. You need to light the paper with a match.

30. In the experiment, the burning inside the bottle can          .

A. finish up the oxygen inside the bottle

B. make a seal in the neck of the bottle

C. equalize the air pressure inside and outside

D. Produce more oxygen inside the bottle

31. How did the egg get into the bottle?

A. The oxygen inside the bottle sucked the egg in.

B. It became soft without the shell.

C. The outside air pressure forced it into the bottle.

D. The neck of the bottle was wide enough.

D

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.

Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or less degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries -- like the UK or France -- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

32. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to _______.

A. get to know each other         B. share the same culture

C. keep each other company         D. develop closer relations

33. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________.

A. the English prefer to make long speeches

B. even talk and silence can be culturally different

C. too many words are of no use

D. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature

34. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?

A. By recognizing different values.

B. By sharing different ways of life.

C. By accepting different habits.

D. By speaking each other’s languages.

35. What would be the best title for the text?

A. How to Understand Each Other.

B. Multicultural Environment.

C. How to Build Up a Relationship

D. Cross-Cultural Differences

For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans.36 Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today, Strauss’ invention continues to be popular not only among Americans but also among people around the world.

Levi Strauss was born in Germany in 1829. 37 He grew up in Kentucky before moving to New York in 1847. Before becoming an American citizen and moving to the West in 1853, Strauss worked in his brother’s dry goods business. This gave him a chance to produce his famous invention. After the gold rush of 1849, Strauss decided to move to the West to seek his fortune.

Strauss did not want to be a person who searched an area for minerals. Instead, he knew he could make a good living by selling supplies to the miners. At first, he planned to sell sewing supplies and cloth.  38 When he heard miners complaining that their clothes were easily broken or they usually tore their pockets during mining, he decided to use a special fabric to make pants for the miners. These pants proved so popular that he quickly ran out of materials to make more.

In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets(铆钉). This made the pants last a long time. Because Davis did not have the money to patent his idea, he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the patent. 39

By the time Strauss died in 1902, he had made a great contribution to American fashion.

40 The business has been growing ever since and Levi Strauss' company is now one of the largest clothing companies in the world.

A. As a young boy, he moved with his family to the United States.

B. Nobody knew what kind of material was suitable.

C. He did and Levi jeans have been made with metal rivets ever since.

D. However, he did not get much business for those products.

E. He also made a great contribution to America's clothing industry.

F. Since they were invented by Levi Strauss, they have become a symbol of American consumer culture.

G. As the business grew, Strauss got much money from it.

第二节 书面表达 (满分25)

One possible version:

Dear Xiao Xue,

I am really sorry that you lost your wallet. But you are only making more trouble for yourself by not telling your parents the truth. You are getting into debt with your friends, who although will be happy to help for a while, will soon become tired of giving you their money.

Also your studies are being affected as you cannot concentrate. The only way to solve this problem is to talk to your parents. Yes they won’t be angry forever. But they won’t be angry forever. They love you and just want the best for you.

The longer you leave this problem the worse it will become for you. You have made a mistake, as we all do. But now you must fix it before things become much more serious.
