第一节  (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Whenever I ask my French high school pupils what they do in their free time, the answer always seems to be one of the followings: a sleep, b see friends or c play video games. Its rare for them to have left the city or even to have gone anywhere in particular within the city. That would, of course, cost money.

Money isn’t that easy to obtain when you’re young, is it? While Christmas and birthdays can leave you temporarily better off, it’s always persuading to spend it thoughtlessly all as soon as you’ve got it rather than putting it aside for a rainy day.

At weekends when I still lived inScotland, I loved nothing more than being out and about with my friends and family, but I took full advantage of the swimming, dance and language clubs that were on offer at my school and university. InFrance, unlike inScotland, most school pupils also have Wednesday afternoons free. Some of them use that time to go to the cinema or do some shopping in the city centre, but luckily they have plenty of alternatives so that entertainment doesn’t always have to cost them money.

A couple of weeks ago, I started a weekly English club at my school. I wanted to give pupils the chance to practise and improve their conversational language skills, which can be difficult in the classroom. Both my fellow assistant and I were a little worried that fifteen-to-eighteen-year-old pupils wouldn’t ever choose more English over the traditional Wednesday afternoon sports clubs and training sessions, but we were all surprised when pupils did start turning up. What’s more, an hour of English, a cup of tea and chocolate biscuit later and they seemed very well entertained indeed!

Then, I honestly do believe that the best things in life are free. Entertainment can be simple, and it doesn’t always come with a price tag!

21. According to Paragraph 1, why do French high school pupils rarely leave the city?

    A. They are lack of money.             B. They are afraid to be lost.

    C. They have no time to waste.          D. Their parents don’t allow them to do so.

22. What does the underlined expression “a rainy day” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. A day on which much rain falls.       B. The weather that is cold and rainy.

    C. A period of raining weather.          D. A future time of financial need.

23. How did the French pupils feel about the weekly English club?

    A. They were unwilling to join the English club.

    B. They thought speaking English was very difficult.

    C. They felt very surprised about the English club.

    D. They entertained themselves in English club.

24. Which is the best title for this passage?

    A. Money isn’t everything.             B. The weekly English club is started.

    C. Entertainment can be simple and interesting.

    D. Entertainment inFrancediffers from that inScotland.

Insurance broker(经纪人)Emily, 29, has about 10 pairs of DC trainers in different colours, as well as a few other styles.

Emily has a fine collection of DC skate shoes, but she’s definitely not a trainer—head. She’s not exclusive(高档的)about them, for a startthere are some Nikes in there. She hasnt got the boxes. She hasn’t kept them all original. She’s not looking for the limited edition, the old-school original that nobody else has got. She just likes DC shoes.

DC, as a brand, is fairly well respected among skaters: it’s been involved in skating for a long time, and it makes proper and good shoes. It’s laughed at a little for being the type of shoe that non-skaters use—non-skaters like Emily—but it’s up there with Vans and Fallen as a “proper” skate shoe. If Emily was a trainer-head, this brand history would be important, but she’s not.

Trainers—sports shoes—are the most revealing of footwear. Old-school Adidas? You’re northern and interested in music and football. Unless you’re wearing Stan Smiths bought in the past year, you’re a fashion bunny. Or Superstars, which mean you like hip-hop. Nike is more of a southernUKbrand. Nike Air Max is the shoes most preferred by burglars, though Reebok Classics are up there, too... I could go on.

What Emily’s collection of DCs show is that she has more personality than her trainers. She doesn’t buy DCs for what the brand says about her. She’s confident enough to make DC mean what she wants it to mean. Her style ignores the message that the brand wants to put across. She buys DCs because they’re comfortable, they’re bright and they suit her multi-coloured, individual style. Emily’s strong sense of self and style means all brands must submit.

25. Why does Emily collect DC skate shoes?

A. She is looking for the limited edition.

B. She has collected the old-school original.

C. She is going to learn how to design trainers.

D. She likes nothing more than DC shoes.

26. If you’re wearing Superstars, it means the person ________.

    A. likes playing football                B. loves hip-hop

    C. is likely to be a burglar              D. may be a northerner

27. According to the text, what can we know about DC?

    A. It has recently involved in skating.     B. It is well-known to skaters.

    C. It means liking to listen to music.      D. It is a trainer brand from Fallen.

28. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.

    A. Emily buys DCs for what the brand says about her.

    B. Emily’s style shows the meaning of DC trainers

    C. Emily wants to make the brand of DC better-known

    D. Emily buys DCs for their comfort and to show her personality

Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.

Traditional migration(迁移)paths take birds through countries that are not protecting locations to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration, or flight, paths, of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas. The major danger for migratory birds is development. Building and paving has covered over nature where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another.

The problem is that many of these small birds die along their migration because they don’t have a safe place to cat and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next leg of their journey. “They simply die along the way,” says one of the scientists.

Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts ofEast Asiaare having the most difficult time protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. In addition, many of the sanctuaries(避难所)do not repeat enough with the paths of migrating birds.

One species that is now extinct is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says.

The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopover areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have protected safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not. A bird might die. One scientist who is not involved in the report tells the Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds.

He says small changes—like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of areas birds would be likely to use—could make a big difference.

29. What does the development have effect on migratory birds?

    A. Protecting their homelands to eat and rest.  B. Changing their flying paths or homelands.

    C. Causing birds to be in danger or even die.   D. Providing more food and rest places.

30. Many birds die in the migration paths are because the following EXCEPT _________.

    A. they don’t have a safe place to eat food     B. they have no place to restore their energy

    C. they can’t find a safe place to have a rest    D. their flying paths are too long

31. From the text, we can infer that ________.

    A. most of the birds have died out recently

    B. the world can’t protect safe areas for birds

    C. the world should work together to protect birds

    D. urban areas can’t provide safe areas for birds

32. What’s the best title of the text?

    A. The world should protect bird species.     B. Homeland loss endangers migrating birds.

    C. Our world gets poorer because of losing bird species.

    D. Human beings help birds live in good condition.
